SUB-PLOT
An angered snarl tore through the forest causing animals to flee and cry out in fear.
Birds took to wing and deer barked in the distance and a whimper was heard from a wolf.
A family was under pressure, it was breaking point and as silence descended on the forest a voice rang loud and clear through the trees
"How dare you disgrace your family and pack like this?"
A white wolf stared up at his mother with wide red coloured eyes, his ears reclined to his head in a display of submission and fear.
"Mother, I … I…"
He stuttered, under the piercing gaze of his mother, the dominant she-wolf of the pack he was born and raised in.
"You know the law, ‘Never court with a stranger beyond the pack borders!’"
The alpha female’s voice boomed as she recited the law to her son who was curled in a ball of submission under her.
"I know, I’m sorry…"
Zenyr squeaked in a tone that broke at the end and he felt defeated.
Closing her eyes, Tsala knew that there was no returning from this, breaking a powerful law.
No matter of even being the blood of the alpha, you break a law you suffer the same fate as any other member of the pack. Exile.
Drawing in a long deep breath, the ebony coloured alpha female also closed her eyes and sighed shaking her head slowly.
"I understand that you are my son, Zenyr, but you know the law and the repercussions."
"Ma…"
Another voice piped up from behind, it was Cozen, Zenyr’s younger brother and best friend.
The white and blue male wolf stepped up to where his sibling lay and their mother towered over, even he couldn’t meet the alpha female’s gaze. He was only a juvenile for the moment.
"Ma, they say you can’t help who you fall in love wi…"
Cozen was silenced mid-sentence with a cautioning growl from their mother, Tsala and both siblings flinched in response. The alpha female’s pelt bristled, light blue eyes shooting a penetrating gaze at the younger of the two males, who attempted to compose the situation at paw, but evidently failed in doing so. It seemed even her youngest wouldn't help sway her choice.
Zenyr’s heart sank with the weight of the unspoken words of exile, but his body remained frozen in place with the faint hope that his mother would reconsider.
Not only that, but young Cozen had also drawn the same sentence as his closest sibling, to be exiled from the pack.
Exiled from their family, siblings and friends.
Exiled from everything they had ever known and loved.
The reverberating dull growl of their mother was a sure warning that she was running low on patience, and if they didn’t make a move soon, exile may no longer be the fate they suffer.
Cozen leaned down to his brother and grasped his scruff gently tugging him upwards, and reluctantly the male wolf stumbled to his paws.
Taking the risk, the younger male wolf turned and looked at their mother, his expression an unspoken question of 'please forgive us'.
It was a step too far, Tsala snarled and lurched forwards, snapping her jaws around part of the youth's neck, mostly thick fur and scruff.
It was a shock, and Cozen yelped in surprise his body jolting upwards into a rear and he kicked out with his forepaws, catching his mother’s face with a stray claw.
Zenyr's red hued eyes widened as he watched her mother attack his younger brother and a sharp cry fell from his muzzle before it mutated into a snarl of his own.
Within him, a heat was building, rising from his semi-crouched position Zenyr spun and jumped to the flank of his brother, his muzzle drawn back exposing his teeth in a snarl, his eyes darting around.
The air around the felt suddenly full and cramped as more growls and snarls rose into the air, but no more bodies joined in the tussle between the mother and siblings.
Most of the wolves who were under the laws of Tsala had already seen enough and made their choices of whether they were staying or leaving, but others would be loyal and stick by the alpha female and her decision.
In the distance, a howl rose above the trees and fell upon the ears of the squabbling family and once more a booming snarl fell on the trees rendering all of the wolves silent.
Tsala released her son and stepped back, her head lowered to the level of her spine and her tail risen into a ‘C’ above her back.
Through her clenched exposed teeth she growled;
"Leave now, or be disposed of."
Her tone was venomous and ice cold. In Tsala’s eyes, the fate of Cozen and Zenyr was sealed, though in her heart it was a pain.
Cozen's body was shaking, his pelt standing on end as he held a silent snarl in the face of their mother, his light russet coloured eyes locked on the blazing blue eyes of what was their mother.
"Come, Zenyr, let us go. We are clearly not wanted here." Cozen's heart broke.
He muttered bitterly in the direction of his mother, who was holding back the urge to rip the two wolves to shreds.
Inside, Tsala loved the two wolves dearly for they were her children, but after losing her second mate and being forced to look after the pack alone, she had no choice but to lay the law on everyone.
Tsala flinched slightly and receded a bit, her snarl lowering and her posture changing; she turned away from the two wolves who were her children, hot tears springing to her eyes.
Her body was tense with so many emotions; love, hate, anger, defeat, betrayal.
Zenyr growled once more before spinning back around and breaking into a sprint, the wolves who had been around them parting to allow him to passage through.
Only did he pause when he realised Cozen was not following and he shouted back at him, he knew the young wolf didn't really want to leave their mother. But they had no choice, they will be killed.
"Come, now. We will move on and start of anew. Forget about the past, forget about our family. That is until the time comes…"
His words drifted off as his brother met up with him and with a final glance at their mother, the sorrow in Tsala’s eyes was clear for all to see.
With that, the siblings left the land of their mother, shortly met up with Zenyr’s mate, ----. The three were emotional but knew they would never get accepted back into the pack of their mother so set off alone.
After days and nights of traveling in silence, Cozen finally broke the voice barrier and spoke "What will we do now? We have no pack, no home, and no family."
Zenyr muttered bitterly and looked to his brother who shrugged meagrely then looked to his paws.
"We start our own pack, our own family, our own home. We let go of the past and the troubles it has caused us."
While the three of them continued on their search for a new settlement, Cozen thought about if Zenyr had broken up with his mate, maybe their mother would allow them re-acceptance. Even so, Zenyr wouldn't have even thought about it if it was an option, for his mate was carrying a litter of pups.
"We have a great start for our own little family." Zenyr mumbled in a low tone with a glance to his mate.
"You've got something in you, Cozen. You'll lead us when you come of age." His deep red eyes glistened as he looked at his blue and white brother.
"...what?" Cozen gasped, hs nostrils flaring as he tried to process what his best friend had said.
"You want me to lead? But I'm too young, I need you!"
Cozen started to panic, worried he was going to loose his brother too.
Nudging the young wolf, Zenyr chuffed reassuringly "I'll be here to help guide you. When you're ready to stand on your own four paws, I'll let you."
Little did they know that back at their birth pack there was a rebellion going on and more of the family had grown tired of the unrelenting madness of Tsala.
Not far behind the three, there were more of their family who remained silent as they stalked the out casted trio to where their fortunes may lay.
